Understanding Trauma

Trauma is the result of an overwhelming amount of stress that exceeds one's ability to cope, or integrate the emotions involved with that experience. The assistance of a therapist is fundamental to healing from trauma. At The Center for Integrative Healing, we help clients who have experienced physical, sexual, and emotional abuse, as well as community violence.

We also have clinicians who are certified to work with active duty service members, veterans, and their families. Our approach is trauma-informed, meaning we recognize the widespread impact of trauma and understand potential paths for recovery.

"Trauma is a fact of life. It does not, however, have to be a life sentence." — Peter A. Levine

Our Approach to Healing

Safety & Stabilization

The first stage of recovery is establishing safety. This includes safety in your body, in your relationships, and in your environment.

Processing

Remembrance and mourning. This involves reviewing trauma memories in a safe and structured environment to allow them to be fully processed.

Integration

Reconnect with ordinary life. The final stage focuses on reconnecting with yourself, others, and meaningful activities.
